Akshata paints with yarn – Weaving and Textiles
Akshata’s passion for painting landscapes and observational drawings around nature found expression in the medium of Tapestry weaving, which she calls painting with yarn. She was introduced to weaving a tapestry in the second year of studying fine art in textile design, in Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai.
Her material explorations have always been eco-sensitive and emerge from nature, quite often un-orthodox choices. Akshata pursued her masters in Fashion & Textiles from Heriot Watt University in the Scotland in 2019. Her master’s project focused on designing textiles inclusive of the blind, delving deeper into the aesthetic and tactile possibilities of weaving. With this experience she got an opportunity to develop tactile responses of the materpieces of the private collection for MAP Bangalore. One of the pieces was a response to Raja Ravi Varma’s chromo lithograph.
Teaching hand weaving through workshops in an artist collaborative space, Art Village, Karjat has been her favourite activity, driving her passion for weaving and art. She has also held weaving workshops through collaborations with museums, art galleries and art curators as well in her space. She has been a resident artist at Space Studio, Baroda in 2021.
