About This Artist

Mata ni Pachedi literally means “behind the mother goddess”.

Belonging to the Vaghari community, Kiran Chitara is an eighth-generation artist based in Vasana in Gujarat. Since 1990 he has conducted around 270 workshops all over India and in different countries.

He has taught students from University of Washington School of Public Health, Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Royal Ontario Museum Toronto, Canada, Swiss national Suisse, Switzerland, Tokyo National Museum, Japan, Victoria and Albert Museum, NIFT , NID, CEPT and many more

Each Pachedi is a textile-based folk art derived from the Kalamkari style of painting, featuring the Mother Goddess at the centre and her stories, the remaining cloth is then filled with images of devotees along with flora and fauna. They are essentially an expression of the divine cosmic energy of the mother goddess, and the unified manifestation of her creative, and destructive principles.
