Overview

Art Village Karjat invites seven full-time artists to participate in Lumina Co-Lab, an intensive, 5-day art residency. This unique experience challenges artists from diverse technical backgrounds to transcend individual practice and collaboratively design, curate, and produce a single artwork that explores the dynamic interplay of Ceramics and Light.

The final piece will be featured in a public showcase and potential sale listing (subject to curator approvals and completion) at Art Village Karjat, providing a lasting legacy of this collaborative effort.

The Statement: Light and Clay

The core of this residency is to resolve a single artistic statement: To create an integrated art piece using light and ceramics.

Participants will move beyond simple illumination, exploring how light can play with clay and vice versa—through texture, shadow, transparency, or reflection—to produce a cohesive, thought-provoking sensory experience.

The Collaborative Process

This residency is a true experiment in artistic democracy and technical excellence.

Co-Curation & Co-Creation

The seven selected artists will go through all phases—from conceptual ideation and design iteration (co-curation) to hands-on building and assembly (co-creation). Success hinges on a genuine willingness to share creative vision and embrace the openness of the collaborative process.

Expert Mentorship

Participants will work under the mentorship of a distinguished Senior Ceramic Artist, who will primarily serve as a facilitator for conceptual discussions and, crucially, as the main technical lead for all final ceramic production, ensuring structural integrity and a professional finish.

The Deliverable

The goal is to converge on one final art piece. Multiple initial sketches, models, and iterations are encouraged, but the final output must be a singular, professionally resolved work ready for showcase. Artists are also expected to document the process and make a submission of process + output as a deliverable of the residency. You will get full assistance in doing so.

Who Should Apply?

We are seeking seven artists who meet the following stringent criteria:

  • Professional Status: 6 spots for full-time, working artist (non ceramic) and 1 part time/student artist (non ceramic).
  • Technical Mastery: Possess strong technical skills in their art medium, ready to be applied to a cross-disciplinary project.
  • Enthusiasm & Openness: Must demonstrate an enthusiastic, creative mindset and a proven capacity for collaboration and shared artistic ownership.
  • Medium Focus: While all mediums are welcome (e.g., sculpture, architecture, metalwork, digital art, paper, fabric), all applicants must demonstrate an interest in working with light and ceramics.

Facilities

Access to a dedicated Ceramic Studio (including kilns) and the flexibility to establish a safe, temporary working area for all required lighting components. 5kgs of clay for each artist. Nature engulfed space to forage natural material and inspiration. Daily discussions.

Outcome

Artwork ready for installation/showcase + artwork concepts

Showcase

The completed artwork will be listed for public viewing at a key public spot within Art Village Karjat. The digital documentation will be available on the website.

Application and Intake Process

Step 1: Apply

You have to apply to the residency through the form below. You will receive a call to make sure you are aligned with the residency and take any questions you may have.

Step 2: Video Call

It is of utmost importance for us to create a non judgemental and a safe space for artists to tap into the flow of creativity during the residency. If your application is shortlisted, you will receive a call to schedule a video call with the residency curator and the head of art village.

This call is to gauge your openness to experiment and co-create in collaboration with other artists. This small step helps us and you to have an insightful, positive and memorable art residency experience.

Step 3: Acceptance Letter and an Opportunity to Reserve Your Seat

An acceptance letter DOES NOT confirm your spot at the residency. An acceptance will be sent to all artists whom we believe are the right fit for the specific cohort for the residency. Seats will be blocked on a first come first serve basis. 

Hence, it is important to apply and initiate your residency application as soon as possible.
